About the GCFB

What We Do

Board members work closely with their local foresters and primarily serve as advisory, educational, and facilitating bodies, collaborating on a variety of programs throughout the county and state.

The State Association, in concert with the county boards, previews proposed legislation and represents the interests of forestry with local, state, and federal legislatures.

County boards assist the Maryland Forest Service with the promotion of stewardship, conservation, and sustainable use of Maryland's forest resources (urban, suburban and rural), and educate the general public and private forest landowners about the wide range of forest benefits.

Local programs include the annual Arbor Day 5th grade poster contest, tree seedlings for 3rd graders, 4-H photo contest at the county fair, county fair booth/tree giveaway and American chestnut restoration project.

Who We Are

Members of the Forestry Board are appointed by the Director of the MD Forest Service on the recommendation of the members of the Board and the local forester.

Requirements for membership are an interest in sustainable forestry and a desire to see our renewable natural resource wisely used and managed.

Members are often local leaders, planners, commissioners, tree farmers, forest product workers, arborists, educators, farmers, forest consultants, loggers, forest landowners, and government representatives. There are many other groups represented on the Boards.

Our meetings are open to the public and typically held the 2nd Monday of the month at the DNR Mt. Nebo office (virtual option also available). To inquire about the status of upcoming meetings, call 301-334-3296 or e-mail melissa.nash@maryland.gov or visit the link below for more information.
