Envirothon
The Maryland Envirothon is an environmental program that emphasizes the interdependence of natural resources and hands-on learning experiences with teachers, community members, and natural resource personnel. This annual state-wide event is sponsored by the local Soil Conservation Districts, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, the Maryland Department of Agriculture, the Maryland Department of the Environment and the United States Department of Agriculture.

The Garrett County competition is typically held in April each year with 2-3 teams of 5 students each participating from both Northern and Southern High Schools. The competition tests students’ knowledge in five areas: soils, forestry, wildlife, aquatics and a changing current issue.
The winning team from each county advances to the state competition. Throughout the year, GCFB members help with county-wide study sessions and have visited individual schools to help teams prepare for the event. In 2018, each school was presented with their own leaf sample collection from the GCFB and Allegany College of Maryland Forestry Program.

Students interested in participating should contact their school's Envirothon advisor. For more information, also visit https://mdenvirothon.org/
